Getting Started with Codebook

This document is intended to walk you through setting up Codebook for the first time. If you have already set up Codebook and wish to Sync with Codebook on a new device, please see Syncing with a New Device.

On macOS:

  1. Download and install Codebook on your Mac.
  2. Launch Codebook (it should be in the Applications folder).
  3. The first thing you'll do is set your Master Password, and re-enter it to confirm.
  4. Click on Set Password
  5. You will be prompted to Enable Touch ID Login, if this feature is available on your device.
  6. You will be asked if you would like to Enable Statistics
  7. You will be asked if you would like to Enable Password Review
  8. You will be asked - Do you already use Codebook?  Select No, setup sync for a new database
  9. You can sync your data using Desktop WiFi, Dropbox or Google Drive. Choose Sync Service from the drop down list.

    Syncing is the means to synchronize your Codebook data with all of your devices that use Codebook. If you only use Codebook on one device, you can use the sync feature to make a backup of your data on another device in case of machine failure.

  10. Click on Continue
  11. The Setup Your Sync Key menu will be displayed. You will be asked - Have you already created your Sync Key in another copy of Codebook?  Click on No

    NOTE: If you have created your Sync Key already, choose Yes here and see Syncing with a New Device.

  12. Your new Sync Key will be generated. Click on Next
  13. The Backup Sync Key menu will be displayed. There are 2 options to Backup your Sync Key: Print Backup QR Code and Write Down Word List. It is recommended that you choose at least one of these options. Click on Next
  14. The Sync Key Setup Complete screen will be displayed. This screen contains links to the Codebook User Guide and detailed Sync Key and Filling in Forms information. Tap Done

On Windows:

  1. Download and install Codebook on your Windows PC.
  2. You will be prompted to Enter a master password. Click on Login
  3. You will be prompted to Please confirm new master password. Click on Login
  4. The Setup Your Sync Key screen will be displayed. You will be asked - Have you already created your Sync Key in another copy of Codebook? Click No Click Next

    NOTE: If you have created your Sync Key already, choose Yes here and see Syncing with a New Device.

  5. The Sync Key Created screen will be displayed. Your new Sync Key is ready. Click Next

  7. The Sync Key Setup Complete screen will be displayed. This screen contains links to the Codebook User Guide and detailed Sync Key information. Tap Done

On iOS:

  1. Visit this link on your iOS device to install Codebook.
  2. Launch Codebook for the first time on your iOS device
  3. Tap Get Started
  4. Create a Master Password, reenter to confirm.
  5. Tap Next
  6. You will be prompted to Enable Touch ID Login or Enable Face ID Login, if this feature is available on your device.
  7. You will be asked if you would like to Enable Notifications
  8. You will be asked if you would like to Send Statistics
  9. You will be given the option to select a sync method.

  10. If you already use Codebook you can sync your data using one of these providers.Google Drive Dropbox Desktop WiFi Set up sync later. For a new user, it recommended that you select Set up sync later
  11. The Setup Your Sync Key screen will be displayed. You will be asked - Have you already created your Sync Key in another copy of Codebook? Tap No
  12. Your new Sync Key will be generated. Tap Next
  13. The Backup Sync Key menu will be displayed. There are 2 options to Backup your Sync Key: Print Backup Code and Write Down Word List. It is recommended that you choose at least one of these options. Click on Next
  14. The Sync Key Setup Complete screen will be displayed. This screen contains links to the Codebook User Guide and detailed Sync Key and Password AutoFill Information. Tap Done

On Android:

  1. Visit this link on your Android to install Codebook.
  2. Launch Codebook for the first time on your Android.
  3. Set the master password - Tap GO
  4. Confirm your password - Tap GO
  5. If the feature is available on your device, you will be prompted to allow Codebook to use Fingerprint Authentication
  6. The Setup Your Sync Key screen will be displayed. You will be asked - Have you previously created a Sync Key within Codebook on another platform or device? Tap No

    NOTE: If you have created your Sync Key already, choose Yes here and see Syncing with a New Device.
