The password you use to open Codebook. You create this password when you setup Codebook. It is used to encrypt/decrypt the data on your device. We recommend that you use a secure password because it is the key to accessing all the data you are keeping secure in Codebook. You need to remember this password.
Your Master Password is NOT stored by Zetetic, the Codebook Company, so if you forget it, we have no way to provide you with it or reset it for you.

The key used to encrypt your data when syncing via any sync method for ALL of your devices. It is generated for you when you Setup your Sync Key or when you create a Codebook Cloud Account. You only have one Sync Key. The same Sync Key is used for ALL of your devices using Codebook. It is a single key used to access all of your data. You can think of it as the one key that opens the vault that contains your data. Anyone that wants to open the vault must have the same key.
Like the Master Password, the Sync Key is NOT stored by Zetetic, the Codebook Company, so if you forget it, we have no way to provide you with it or retrieve it for you. Losing your Sync Key makes it impossible to decrypt your data that is used for syncing with other devices. Since your synced data also serves as a backup to your device in the case of a device failure or loss, loss of access makes the remote data that is acting as a backup unusable.

Even if you only use Codebook on one device, you need a backup of your data because we know devices break. To create a backup of your data, you will need to Sync your data with either Codebook Cloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox. (For a desktop version of Codebook, you can perform a Local Folder sync and store the file on another device.) This synced data is a backup of the data on your device and can be used to restore ** your data after your device is repaired or replaced. We recommend that you backup (ie. sync) periodically to keep the backup current.
** - You MUST have a Backup Sync Key and your Master Password to restore your data.
If you use Codebook on more than one device, you want to keep the data on all of your devices up to date and you do this by syncing. To Sync data between devices the Sync Key must be the same on all of your devices so they can sync.
Every user needs a backup of their Sync Key regardless of how many devices they have using Codebook. It is required to restore your data in the case of device failure and can make it easier to setup Sync when you add a new device.
