Resetting Codebook

You can reset Codebook on your device and then restore your data from Codebook Cloud, another device, or a cloud service backup.

Warning: Resetting Codebook is a destructive operation, data stored on your device by the app will be deleted.

When would you need to reset Codebook?

If you forgot your Codebook Master Password or simply cannot get into Codebook and you have all of your data on another device or have synced to a supported cloud service and you have a backup of your Sync Key. The backup could be any one of the following:

  • a printed Codebook Backup QR code with your Master Password written on it
  • your 20 word Sync Key Word List
  • a backup Sync Key file (called Codebook - for Android & iOS or Codebook.synckey for macOS and Windows)

How to reset Codebook

In order to reset Codebook, you must delete the local database used by the application, and in some cases re-install the application. Follow these instructions to reset Codebook.

On android

  1. If Codebook is running, quit the app
  2. Launch the Settings Application
  3. Navigate into ApplicationsManage ApplicationsCodebook
  4. Tap the Clear Data button
  5. Restart Codebook on Android and either scan a sync key from another device using Codebook or select Setup Sync Key Later

On ios

  1. Locate the Codebook icon on your device’s Home screen
  2. Hold your finger down on the icon. When the popup appears, tap Remove App
  3. Tap Delete App
  4. Tap Delete to confirm
  5. Launch the App Store app on your device
  6. Tap the Account icon
  7. Tap Apps & Purchase History
  8. Tap Your Apps
  9. Search for Codebook Password Manager
  10. Tap the download icon
  11. Tap Open to re-install the app
  12. When Codebook launches, either scan a sync key from another device using Codebook or select Setup Sync Key Later

On macos

  1. If Codebook is running, quit the app
  2. Open Finder
  3. Choose the Go menu, select Go to Folder…
  4. Copy the following path and paste it in the text field (all one line): ~/Library/Group Containers/PD7G6HRMGV.net.zetetic.STRIP/Strip
  5. In that folder, locate default.codebook and rename or remove the file
  6. Launch Codebook again, either scan a sync key from another device using Codebook or select Setup Sync Key Later

NOTE: If you are using a version of Codebook for macOS that is lower than 4.3.0, use the following path instead: ~/Library/Containers/net.zetetic.Strip.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Strip

On windows

  1. If Codebook is running, quit the app through FileExit Application
  2. Open Windows Explorer (“My Computer”)
  3. Enter %APPDATA%\Zetetic LLC\ in the Address field and hit enter
  4. Within that location is a Strip folder. Delete that folder
  5. Launch Codebook again, and either scan a sync key from another device using Codebook or select Setup Sync Key Later
