The easiest way to restore/recover your data to an instance of Codebook (say a fresh install on a new device) is to sync the data using one of our sync services (Codebook Cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or Desktop Wi-Fi). This will only work if you have previously performed a sync and you have a backup of your sync key. If so, follow these instructions for Restoring Data from Backup with Sync.
If you have not synced your data you or do not have a copy of your sync key, you still may be able to recover your data from a device backup using these steps.
You will need a backup of your Codebook database from some type of backup AND you need to know your Master Password to be able to open the encrypted database file.
You may be able to recover your Codebook data from a backup of your device, if the backup contains a copy of your Codebook database. Your Codebook data is stored in an encrypted file called strip.db. The location of this file varies based on your device type. Follow the instruction for your device type for specific instructions.
If you have a backup of your device (Google One or other device specific backup), it may contain your encrypted Codebook data. When restoring from the backup, your Codebook data should be restored as well. We do not control enabling backups or their retention. Because of this, we strongly recommend not relying solely on a device backup to backup your Codebook data.
If you have iCloud backup enabled on your device, iCloud will backup your encrypted Codebook data. When restoring from iCloud, your Codebook data should be restored as well. That being said, iCloud backups are known to be short-lived and overwritten (i.e. only the last 3 are maintained). We've seen cases where an iCloud backup with a users Codebook data was overwritten by a newer iCloud backup and irretrievable. Because of this, we strongly recommend not relying solely on iCloud backups to backup your Codebook data.
Follow Apple's instructions for restoring your data from iCloud and iTunes backups.
On macOS, your Codebook database is stored in a container located here: ~/Library/Group Containers/PD7G6HRMGV.net.zetetic.STRIP/Strip
Within that location is a default.codebook package which contains a strip.db file. This file contains all of your Codebook data. Assuming your backup mechanism (like Time Machine) is set to back up this location, you can restore from your backup and launch Codebook then login with your Codebook Master Password and access your data.
If you have access to a backup, One Drive or a Windows backup to an external drive for example, you can try the following:
Hopefully you have been able to recover your Codebook data from a device backup. To avoid the need to recover your data you can subscribe to Codebook Cloud the automatc sync service which is the best way keep your passwords and other secure data in sync across all of your devices. For more information see Codebook Cloud.
